Create Great Outdoor Spaces

Whether you have an expansive garden or an intimate patio or balcony, developing your outdoor living space can increase your home’s appeal. Here are a few fun ways to make your outdoor space interesting, useful and comfortable.

Incorporate Native Plants

Because native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions, they require far less water, saving time, money, and perhaps the most valuable natural resource, water. In addition to providing vital habitat for birds, many other species of wildlife benefits as well.  Click here for a a list of native plants specific to your zip code.

Work with Natural Elements

Look for  interesting shapes that compliment the scale of the area. Found twigs, rocks, or leaves can be used to fill containers or add to your display.   Shells can be used as vessels for practical or decorative items.

Bring the Indoors Out

Carry your indoor palette outdoors using pops of color, furniture and shapes that mirror your interior scheme.

Comfortable Seating

Spending time in nature can reduce stress and improve mood. Choose seating that is both comfortable and durable to encourage increased leisure and relaxation time.

Mix and Match

Choose mixed accessories and furniture to create layers of style and interest.  Tie items together by selecting (3) similar finishes to balance the look.

Create Zones

Designate areas for eating, drinking, entertaining or relaxing by arranging furniture and decor items by function.

Keep it Low

Pieces that are low to the ground will preserve sight lines and help you and your guests feel comfortable and grounded in the space.

Pick Powder-Coated Metals

Prevent rust by choosing powder-coated metals; a process by which a plastic finish is applied in powder form and baked to a fluid state to bond it to the metal surface. Do a visual inspection to see if your item has been powder coated; a powdered metal will have more texture and softer, rounder edges than untreated items.

Personal Touches

Pick personal accents and comfort items that evoke feelings of comfort and joy; like soft pillows, greenery, lanterns, and photos.

Light it Up

Proper lighting is a necessity for safety and style.  Install wet-rated or damp-rated lighting to create warmth and set the tone of your space.

Scale & Proportion

Scale relates to the size of an object compared with the space it occupies, while proportion is concerned with the relationship of elements to one another, and to the whole. Fewer, larger items make a small space feel bigger.  Too many small pieces can make the space feel cluttered.
