Organizing Blog – Master Closet Purge

Whether you are in the process of purchasing a new home, remodeling or trying to make do with your current situation, one area of any home that effects every single morning is the same: the master closet. The basic principals of sorting and purging clothes in a master closet are pretty consistent whether you’re organizing an original 1950’s style reach-in or a grand master closet dream space. Here are three steps to take to make your closet into your dream closet:

  1. Every single item in your closet should fit you TODAY. Now, before you balk at this statement, hear me out. I understand that you may not be your dream size. Maybe you just had a baby or are recovering from a long-term health issue. As a mom of two little girls, I COMPLETELY understand. When I’m helping a client sort and purge their closet, I never ask them to purge all of the clothing items that are too snug. I do, however, insist that those items find a home outside of hanging space in their master closet. I encourage a “too small” box (or three!) but, again, to live elsewhere in the home.
  2. Any items that need to be dry-cleaned or repaired should be taken within a week to the appropriate place. A WEEK!? Yep, a week. If you aren’t willing to take an item to the tailor or drycleaner within 7 days, you probably don’t love it that much to begin with.
  3. Try on every single item in your closet. Look, I know this is a beating, but if you want to purge your closet the right way, this is a MUST. We’ve always followed the same basic principals that have recently become popular with the Marie Kondo-style of organizing which is to ask yourself this: does this item bring you joy? Or better yet, does it make you feel good? DAMN good? If yes, keep it. If not, its time to donate or consign it.

The end goal is to be able to walk into your master closet blind-folded and no matter which items you randomly choose, you can rest assured that those items CURRENTLY fit, aren’t in need of repair and most importantly, make you feel damn good when you put them on. It is going to take time and be a lot of work but we promise you, you’ll thank yourself every single morning when you get dressed without stress and without angst. It is a much more pleasant way to start the day!
